If you’ve been avoiding bread due to gluten sensitivity, you’re not alone. But sourdough might be a gentler option and we’re working hard to make it even more accessible.
Here’s what you need to know about sourdough and gluten, where we’re at with gluten-free options, and how you can help shape what’s next.
Why We Don’t Offer Gluten-Free Yet
We get asked this all the time and the short answer is... not yet.
- We haven’t yet found a gluten-free flour blend that delivers the texture, taste, or fermentation benefits you’d expect from real sourdough.
- Many gluten-free options on the market feel like a compromise and that’s not what we want to offer.
Our goal is simple: to create a true sourdough experience whether you’re gluten-free or not.
Sourdough & Gluten Sensitivity | What You Should Know
This is where it gets interesting.
- During the sourdough process, the long fermentation time partially breaks down gluten, more so than in conventional breads.
- Some people with mild gluten sensitivity find that they can enjoy properly fermented sourdough without discomfort.
- But sourdough is not gluten-free.
If you have coeliac disease, sourdough is not safe to consume.
If you’re unsure how you react to gluten, always speak to a health professional before experimenting.
Our Commitment to Finding a Gluten-Free Option
We believe gluten-free bakers deserve great bread too.
- We’re actively researching gluten-free sourdough solutions that can ferment, rise, and taste like real sourdough.
- But we won’t launch anything unless it’s truly worthy of the You Knead Sourdough name.
If we wouldn’t bake with it at home, we won’t sell it to you.
